David Siegel - PULL

Just had the opportunity to listen to David Siegel's keynote speech - which to say the least was very enlightening and thought provoking.  David started his presentation by acknowledging that Web 3.0 is an evolution of the way in which we perceive and utilize the web.  He asked how can the web solve fundamental problems in business considering that we spend 53% of our time searching for the "right" kind of information - roughly half the time spent researching is spent on filtering information and deciding whether it is relevant.  While not providing an explicit answer, his position revolved around the paradigm shift of "pulling" information rather than having information being "pushed".

How do we "pull"?  He defines the dynamic as Semantic Web and provided 5 fundamental and defining variables for the Web 3.0 era:

 - having unambiguous content
 - having information that is findable and accessible
 - that information/data is interoperable
 - that information is not duplicated and move in the direction of modular data that is reuseable
 - that the data can be pulled

If Web 1.0 was about populating and pushing information onto the web, Web 2.0 as my partner eloquently describes is allowing users to react to that information.  Web 3.0 based on my understanding is how can the web become more user-centric and customized based on experience and preferences.

So, this new ‘semantic’ web will be intuitive and ultimately able to reason with tendencies, search words, and meaning of the user. This new ‘digital person’ will, at the end of the day, serve as that little voice in your head that can, effectively, read your mind. The personal data locker (PDL) will be platform; accessible via a central login and password and will from there be able to access, or not access (depending on your settings), the rest of your online accounts – Facebook, twitter, online banking, medical records, etc. It is great to give more depth to the new notion of ‘Web 3.0 but to be honest, it’s a bit scary. I mean where will it all end?

Agreed. I think "user-centric" can go both ways. There are users that don't stop to think what "user-centric" means to the large corporations; they allow themselves are being marketed, as a product, to advertisers. Good explanation here - http://www.reddit.com/tb/e772i

We should be more concerned about how we so carelessly allow our personal data to be managed by a corporation that doesn't have our self-interests at heart. If you go to Facebook, Account, Settings, there's a link called "Download Your Information". This essentially is a .zip file of everything you've ever uploaded to Facebook. People should be careful of how much they let someone else manage their personal details.

Although 3.0 is much more than that, and has the ability to become great (think customized food searches), I think we need to be wary of user-centric and customized experiences.
